BARNHAVEN

Barnhaven is a small residential care home that has been providing personal care and long stay accommodation for up to 15 older people from Bampton and the surrounding parishes for well over 40 years.

 

It is owned and has been operated by the local authority, Devon County Council who have recently decided, as part of the Social Services Modernisation Programme, that all 24 residential care homes in the county will be transferred to the Shaw Healthcare Group. Shaw has proposed development plans for 19 of the homes. Barnhaven is one of 5 homes not seen as having a long term viable and sustainable future within the Group.

 

When the local community first learned in December 2005 of the possibility of closure there was an immediate response of strong support for keeping Barnhaven open. A Forum was organized and a proposal to develop Barnhaven as a community care resource centre was submitted to the Director of Social Services. Following further consultations with Devon County Council this proposal has now evolved into:

Barnhaven Community Care 

A new model of support and care for older people 

in a rural community.
